In the wake of the DC Comics BEFORE WATCHMEN panel at this past weekend's C2E2 show, the digital comics news forums have begun latching onto the first released bit of interior art released from the project. Cannily fueling the fans' appetites by providing a mere crumb of visual information, DC has assembled a montage piece featuring representative artwork from all of the minis involved in the series and I have to admit that it all looks rather good. Of direct interest to this blog's readers is of course the participation of our Amanda Conner as the artist and co-writer (with the renowned Darwyn Cooke) on SILK SPECTRE. A.C.'s rendering of an adolescent Laurie Juspeczyk, the future second generation Silk Spectre, wistfully lamenting her lack of "assets" in the mirror as she models what appear to be her mother's crime-fighting togs, can be seen in the lower righthand corner. Unfortunately, what you see here is about as large of an image as you're going to get for now, so further patience is required. (I took this document, cropped it to isolate Amanda's art and hoped it would open up to a somewhat larger scale, but no dice.)

To see the montage piece in context with further snippets of the pre-release hype, I steer you toward DC's NEW FRONTIERSMAN website, which looks like a site that bears keeping an eye on if you're intrigued by what's to come. (One word of advice: When checking out the site, which resembles and old newspaper's front page, look for any words and/or phrases that appear to be highlighted, and be sure to click on them to access the hidden goodies.)

C2E2: Amanda Conner describes 'Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre' as "a little like a romance comic but with beatings" at DC All Access panel

This is the big one, kiddies. C2E2's DC All Access BEFORE WATCHMEN panel proved to be an avalanche of info and discussion of what's to come from that long-anticipated project, and as you gathered from Amanda's quote in the headline, it looks to be a dark ride. The upcoming Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo — happening on April 13th through the 15th — is charged with anticipation for many fan-ready events, among which are creators' panels and meet-and-greets with the luminaries behind the BEFORE WATCHMEN project, among whim can be numbered our own Amanda Conner, who you may have heard is penciling SILK SPECTRE with Darwyn "DC: THE NEW FRONTIER" handling the scripting. An illuminating read, it also clues readers in on how Amanda penciling SILK SPECTRE was one of Darwyn's conditions for accepting the project. The man clearly has taste on top of talent!

The rumors have been simmering for a while but now it can be told: Amanda Conner will be illustrating Silk Spectre, one of the seven upcoming Before Watchmen prequel mini-series from DC Comics. With a script by Eisner Award-winning writer/illustrator Darwyn Cooke (Parker: The Hunter) and Amanda's signature stellar artwork, this four-issue mini looks to be one of the year's most potential-filled and anticipated comics.

There's sure to be an avalanche of media coverage on this, so here's the first salvo from Entertainment Weekly. And be sure to stayed tuned to this blog for more news as it happens!
